Alice Catherine Saben

July 25, 1935 - December 11, 2018

Alice Catherine Saben Rockville, Maryland - Alice C. Saben of Bradford, Mass. passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 11th at Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md. at the age of 83. She was the second oldest daughter of Eva C. (Lambert) Sheridan and John J. Sheridan.
Alice was born and raised in Salem, Mass. and educated there at St. Mary’s Grammar School and St. James High School. She received both a baccalaureate degree and two master’s degrees from Salem State College and was a beloved elementary school teacher in the Haverhill school system for 35 years. Alice (fondly known as “Mrs. Saben”) taught children from kindergarten through 4th grade and especially enjoyed devising creative ways to help them learn. Upon her retirement she was the Head Teacher at Crowell School. While still teaching, she obtained a nursing degree from Northern Essex Community College and embarked upon a second, simultaneous career as a psychiatric nurse at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen for 25 years. In retirement, she volunteered 2 days per week leading mental health groups. Her life was full of love, friendship, and people who adored her. There was nothing she delighted in more than the company of others. She relished her independence and enjoyed reading, participating in recreational activities, visiting different places, and trying new things. She was a traveler, having visited Africa, Italy, Ireland, and Europe. She forged friendships wherever she went, most recently while staying with her daughter and granddaughter in Maryland where she participated in a rigorous pulmonary exercise program two days a week. Alice was predeceased by her parents, her former husband, Charles Saben, and her brothers, John, J. Sheridan Jr. and Thomas J. Sheridan. She was a devoted mother to her children Alyson of Kensington MD, Lynne of Andover, Mass., and Charles Jr. and his wife Barbara of Haverhill, Mass. Alice was an adoring sister to E. Ann Sheridan of West Springfield, Mass. Claire F. Fosberry of Gloucester, Mass. and Marion L Rudolph of Peabody, Mass. She was a loving grandmother to Lahni, Thomas, Lauren, and Nathan, and a caring great-grandmother to Leiana, Amaya, and Gia. Being from a large family, she is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
A memorial Mass celebrating Alice will be held at Sacred Hearts Church in Bradford on December 19th, at 11 a.m. Guests are invited to share their memories from 10:00 to 11 a.m. prior to the Mass in the vestibule upon entry into the church.
