SALEM, NH - Alice Touma Roderigues, our beloved matriarch, passed peacefully at the age of 96 on February 23, 2018, after a brief illness.
Born in Lawrence on November 25, 1921, Alice was the daughter of Shaheen and Elizabeth (Caram) Touma. She was educated at St. Mary Grammar School and St. Mary High School and graduated with the class of 1939. She then studied at Hyannis State Teachers College, and Harvard University and went on to teach the English language to immigrants at Lawrence High School.
Alice was raised along with her six brothers and sisters in the Lebanese Plains section of Lawrence, and was a devoted parishioner of Saint Anthony Maronite Church. With her siblings, she founded the family-operated Economy Cleaners, managing their silk pressing department, and their South Lawrence storefront. She lived alongside her siblings on Tudor Street in Methuen for 30 years, where they all shared in raising each other's families as their own. Upon retirement, Alice moved with her daughter to Salem, N.H., and devoted the rest of her life to raising her two granddaughters and perfecting her BINGO game.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Alfred J. Roderigues; her loving daughter, Missy Kalil; and her beloved granddaughters, Kate Kalil and Jackie Kalil, all of Salem, N.H. Her sister, May, and her husband Edward "Scotty" Gabriel of Salem, N.H.; and her sister-in-law, Phyllis Touma of Methuen, Mass. She is also survived by her godchild, Debra Thomas, of Wilmington; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and great-grand-nieces, and great-grand-nephews, all of whom adored her.
Alice was predeceased by her brothers, Anthony Touma, Chubby Ellis, and Joseph Touma and his wife, Laurie; as well as her sisters, Sadie Goolkasian, and her husband, Paul, and Rose Martino and her husband, Bruno.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, February 25, 2018, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Farrah Funeral Home, located at 133 Lawrence Street, Lawrence, MA. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, February 26, 2018, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Maronite Church located at 70 Lawrence Street, Lawrence, MA. Burial will follow in St. Anthony Maronite Cemetery, North Lowell Street, Methuen, MA.
