Barbara J's Story
Barbara Joan (Hyland) Vitale, 86, a longtime resident of Hampstead, N.H., died on November 27, 2017 at the Hannah Duston Facility, Haverhill.
Born in Lawrence, the daughter of the late James and Yvonne (Jean) Hyland, she was raised and educated in Lawrence, attending Saint Patrick’s Grammar School, graduating in 1944. She was a member of the Lawrence High School Class of 1948. She was the former wife of the late Anthony A. Vitale.
Ms. Vitale worked as a solderer in the assembly of electronic circuit boards for Western Electric, Lawrence, MA for many years before her retirement and later worked in the Deli Department at Shaw’s Supermarket in Plaistow.
A member of St. Anne’s Parish, Hampstead, N.H., she was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed her children and their children most of all. She was happiest while playing with the little ones and teaching them the love of God. She generously gave of herself and her income to raising three generations of her family.
In the past few years as her health declined, she moved from Emerson Park in Hampstead, N.H., to Manzi Elderly Housing, Methuen, then the Stevens Bennett Home, Haverhill and the past year at Hannah Duston Nursing Home, Haverhill.
She enjoyed her fried clams in the summer, the Jean Family Outings and spent many vacations at Salisbury Beach. She enjoyed water exercising and later playing Bingo and watching in her leisure time, The Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN).
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. James R. and Elizabeth Vitale of Plaistow, N.H. and two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathleen M. and Jim Biggins of Waterford, Conn., and Jean Kaszanits of Jacksonville, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Michael Bell, James Vitale, Daniel Vitale, Christopher Kaszanits, Matthew Kaszanits, Gabriel Kaszanits, and Joshua Kaszanits and ten great grandchildren, Michaela Bell, Samantha Bell, Danielle Bell, Christopher Bell, Alexis Bell, Jack Bell, Logan Vitale, Liam Vitale, Arianna Vitale, Maddex Kaszanits, and Nicholas Biggins She was predeceased by her daughter, Sandra Bell and her great-grandson, Nicholas Biggins.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Barbara’s Life Celebration to be held on Friday, December 1, 2017 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. Her funeral will begin on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 8 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in Saint Anne’s Church, Emerson Avenue, Hampstead NH. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Lawrence. The Family requests that memorial donations be made to the Saint Anne’s Food Pantry, 26 Emerson Avenue, Hampstead, NH.
