Brenda Jean's Story
It is with the greatest sorrow that we announce the passing of Brenda Jean Philips Bloomgarden of Chestertown, Md., on September 8, 2017, at the age of 75. She battled cancer for over 20 years with the utmost grace and dignity.
Mrs. Bloomgarden was born on May 4, 1942, in Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Harlan M. and Margaret Boehmler Philips. In 1952, her family moved to Betterton. In 1960, she graduated from Chestertown High School, being recognized for the highest academic average in her class.
She continued her education at the University of Maryland, College Park where she received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics, and master degree in mathematics. She was Professor Emeritus of mathematics at Chesapeake College, where she taught for 30 years.
Mrs. Bloomgarden attended the Chestertown Church of the Nazarene and enjoyed traveling with her family.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Barclay Bloomgarden; daughter, Gail L. Torkildsen, M.D. and her husband, former U.S. Congressman Peter G. Torkildsen of North Chelmsford, Mass.; granddaughter, Margaret Torkildsen; brother, Charles Philips (Shirley) of Philadelphia, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews. She received loving care for over 20 years from her friend and oncologist, Isabella Martire, M.D. of Laurel, Md.
A viewing will be held on Friday evening, September 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, MD, where funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Still Pond Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to Chesapeake College Foundation, or to the breast cancer charity of one’s choice.
