ANDOVER, MA - Carl R. Fitzgerald, 87, of Andover, died at home, on February 15, after a brief illness. June (Henderson) Fitzgerald, his wife of 67 years, and the love of his life, nurtured him at home in his final days with the help of their family.
Born in Lowell, the son of the late Charles Randolph Fitzgerald and Dorothy (Sargent) Fitzgerald, he spent an idyllic childhood in North Tewksbury, where he learned many of the skills - like running a business, building, and farming - that served him throughout his life. It was the act of making his first catch while playing outfield for Tewksbury schools that gave him a lifelong love of baseball.
He and June raised their five children in Andover, where he owned and operated Carl R. Fitzgerald and Sons, Incorporated, a building contracting business, for the better part of 40 years. His sons worked alongside him until his retirement. Their work included the construction of the Andover Townsman Building in Andover. Prior to owning his own business, he delivered mail, delivered milk for H.P. Hood, and worked for a printing company.
Carl enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and planting and tending his large vegetable and flower garden every summer. He generously shared the fruits of his labor with neighbors and family. He loved fishing, and observing the wildlife on Lake Massabesic with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Building relationships with his family and others were a key part of his life. He was a kind and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a thinker, an avid reader, and a man of many interests.
In addition to his wife, June, he is survived by his children, C. Richard Fitzgerald, and his wife, Drucilla, of Salem, N.H., Michael Fitzgerald, and his wife, Kim, of Bridgewater, Mass., Ann Fitzgerald, of North Andover, Mass., and Amy, and her husband, Tim Donahue, of Hampstead, N.H. He also leaves his grandchildren, Erin Fitzgerald, and her partner, Robert Hamman; Grace, Sullivan, and Ethan Donahue; and Devon, and Camryn Fitzgerald; and great-grandchildren, Brianna and Nathan Fay, and Haydyn Hamman. He was predeceased by his son, Peter Randolph (Randy).
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Wednesday, February 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence Street, Andover, MA.
