Carl J.'s Story

The brightest light in our family dimmed but will never go dark in our hearts with the passing of "Captain" Carl J. Finley, Jr., 73, November 2, 2017, at home, with his loving wife, Shirley Lemieux Finley by his side. Carl was born November 12, 1943, to Carl J Finley, Sr. and Ethel Gallagher. Prior to retiring to Port Charlotte, Fla., Carl was a lifelong resident of Woburn Street, Andover, Mass., and graduated from Punchard High School and Andover Institute of Business. He retired from Lucent Technologies, IT Dept. after 39 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include beloved sons, Carl J. III, Daniel (Denise) and Scott (Lisa Cyr); stepson, Timothy Cleary; adoring grandchildren, Holly (Joseph) Workman, Chantel, Carl J. IV (CJ), Rebecca, Jennifer, Joshua, Justin, Stephen and Kevin; step-granddaughter, Danielle Contarino; great-grandson, Collin Workman; sister-in-law, Deborah Lemieux; nephew, Matthew Lemieux; cousin, Alexandra Aldrich Burt; the mother of his sons and former wife, Roberta Hunt Finley; her sisters, brother, their spouses and children; and numerous boating friends from Golden Anchor, Dawn Marina and NEBC.
He was predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law, James (Spud) Lemieux.
Carl dedicated his life to volunteerism. He was a 43-year member of US Coast Guard Auxiliary, First Northern; Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 165, Haverhill, Mass.; Loyal Order of Moose 2121, Port Charlotte, Fla.; American Legion Post 103, Punta Gorda, Fla.; North End Boat Club, Newburyport, Mass.; Peace River Corvette Club, Punta Gorda, Fla.; and Police Dept Marine Patrol, having been named Volunteer of the Year 2016. He also volunteered at Muscle Car City.
The family extends a sincere thank you to the Angels of Tidewell Hospice of South Florida for the care and comfort they gave Shirley and Carl the last five days.
All are invited to a Celebration of Life Sunday, Nov. 12, 2 p.m. at The Loyal Order of Moose, 3642 Loveland Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33952. Services are also planned for summer of 2018 in New England.
