Carmelina F.'s Story
NORTH ANDOVER - Carmelina F. ("Camy") Galvagna of North Andover passed away on December 28, 2017, two days after her 84th birthday, with her loving children by her side. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and educator.
Born to Michael and Mary Cristaldi, Camy grew up in Lawrence, and moved to North Andover as a teenager. She was a 1951 graduate of Johnson High School, after which she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Boston University, as a member of the final graduating class from the College of Practical Arts and Letters.It was a source of pride for Camy that she was the first in her class to be hired for a teaching position. She started her career at Peterborough (New Hampshire) High School, later moving to Haverhill High School before leaving to raise her children. She later went on to earn a Master's degree in Education from Boston University.
In 1958, she married her high school classmate Anthony Galvagna, with whom she raised their two children in North Andover. After dedicating herself to her family, she went back to teaching at Andover High School in the Business Education department for 25 years, retiring in 1999. Camy was often called upon to create and test introductory courses for Andover High, including Photography, Accounting, and Business Law.
An avid cook and baker, she twice was a national finalist in the Pillsbury Bake-Off competition. She was a longtime member and former president of the College Club of Greater Lawrence. In retirement, Camy indulged in her love of travel, visiting China, Russia, Japan, and various European countries. Other passions included honing her skills at bridge, line dancing at the Senior Center, and perfecting her recipe for eggplant. Her greatest joy was to spend time with her family and friends. Additionally, Camy was a devout parishioner of St. Michael's Church in North Andover, and could be found every Sunday morning at the 7:30 a.m. Mass, sitting in the second-row pew. Camy was predeceased by her husband Anthony, who passed away in 1985. She leaves daughter Maria Mesinger and her husband David, son Anthony Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, and her beloved grandchildren Caroline Mesinger, Anthony Galvagna III, and Julia Galvagna; sister, Sally Luzzio, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marie and G. Thomas Catalano, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Samuel and Marguerite Galvagna, numerous nieces and nephews, and her dearest friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the North Andover Scholarship Foundation (P.O. Box 524, North Andover, MA, 01845). Friends are welcome at Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third Street North Andover, Ma. 01845, on Thursday January 4th from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 5, at St. Michael Church.
