HAVERHILL- Donald J. van Vliet, 75, passed away January 23, 2018 at his home in Haverhill.
Born in Holland, he was the son of the late George van Vliet. Raised in occupied Holland, he was liberated by Allied Forces during World War II and came to America at the age of 8. He graduated High School in 1960 and attended Boston University, obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Economics. Donald served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was employed as an electronics technician, managed a car dealership, and was an Uber driver. Donald was known as a very intelligent and kind man who had a wryly subversive and dry sense of humor.
Donald is survived by his sons, Josiah D. van Vliet and his wife, Chelsea of Boston; Derek R. van Vliet and his wife Meghan of Newburyport; a brother, Eric van Vliet and his wife, Joyce of Berkley, Calif.; two sisters, Ellen Schaefer and her husband, David of Sacramento, CA; Susan Ville and her husband, Robert Ville of Satellite Beach, FL; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend a celebration of his life on Saturday, February 10 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main Street, Haverhill. Burial is in late April.
