MERRIMAC- Eileen (Costello) Sheehan Hurley, age 83, longtime resident of Merrimac, died peacefully in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Norwood on July 18, 1934, she was one of three children of the late Joseph and Eileen (Reardon) Costello and was a graduate of Walpole High School, Class of 1952.
Eileen worked as an administrative assistant to the V.P. at A W Chesterton in Groveland for many years. All during her life she was intrigued by and wanted to study handwriting analysis. She pursued her dream and studied for this while working full time at Chesterton. She graduated and became a certified forensic document examiner in 1986 and opened her own office that year. She was qualified as an expert witness and testified in courts all over New England. For 30 years she ran her business out of her home in Merrimac. After she retired from Chesterton, she decided to take a 16 hour per week part time job at the Merrimac Board of Health as their secretary. During that time she was prompted by others to run for a seat on the Board of Health, so she did, was elected and eventually became the Chairman of the Board of Health.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and dear friend, always making time to share special moments with those who were dear to her heart.
After the death of her first husband, John T. Sheehan, who died October 27, 1975, she married her second husband, William W. Hurley, who died December 31, 2008.
She leaves behind countless memories that will be treasured forever by her three children, Linda Worthen and husband, William of Kensington, NH., John "Chip" Sheehan and wife, Cindy of Raymond, NH and Jodi Maguire and husband, Timothy of Merrimac; her five grandchildren, Eric Worthen of S. Hampton, NH, Shawna Winfrey of Rowley, J.T. Sheehan of Nottingham, NH, Bevin Sheehan of Manchester, NH, and Briana Mini of Brockton; her stepchildren, Michael Hurley, Catherine Dyment, Ann Saba, Patricia Arrajj, Maryellen Potter, Gayle Bolduc and Colleen McCann, along with several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, including her dear friend of many years, Debbie Ketchen of Merrimac. In addition to her parents and her husbands, she was also predeceased by two sons, Charles "Charlie" Sheehan and Martin "Marty" Sheehan; her grandson, Bryan Sheehan, her brother, Joseph Costello and her sister, Patricia Costello Bryant.
A most heartfelt thank you goes to Great Lakes Caring Hospice in Newburyport for their wonderful, kind and compassionate care given to our mother and our family by all of their team members.
Services will be private for the family. Arrangements are by Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main Street, Merrimac.
