Elaine R.'s Story
Elaine R. Florent, 89, of Haverhill, Mass., died at Wingate Nursing Home on August 14, 2017, surrounded by her children. Born on February 20, 1928, in Haverhill, she was the daughter of Edgar and Cordelia (Sevigny) Desrosiers.
She was a graduate of St. Joseph School and Haverhill High School. Her primary vocation was as a homemaker for her beloved late husband George and her 10 children. In addition, she worked for many years for Dr. Peter W. Wheeler and served as bookkeeper and Vice President of the Haverhill Police Department Credit Union. Elaine was an excellent typist and fluent in shorthand.
Elaine was a dedicated Catholic who was very active at the former St. Joseph Parish and then All Saints Parish in Haverhill. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies of St. Anne Society, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and for many years scheduled the Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. She had a great love for the Blessed Virgin Mother Mary and recited the rosary daily. She took joy in giving to her favorite charities, including The Marist Fathers, Society of the Little Flower, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
She loved to travel and her favorite places to visit were Bermuda and Aruba. An avid reader, she especially enjoyed reading biographies. She also liked solving crossword puzzles and cheering for local legends Bobby Orr and Doug Flutie. She tirelessly planned many Class of 1946 HHS reunions and Haverhill Police Relief Association events.
Elaine will be remembered most for her gentle and joyful spirit. She always had a smile on her face and encouragement for anyone in need. She never spoke an unkind word and found happiness every day in life’s most simple pleasures. She took the greatest delight in her ten children and her grandchildren. In her family and the larger community, she was an inspiration to all, nurturing her children with grace and sacrifice.
She was married for 65 years to George A. Florent, who died on January 8. She also was predeceased by her brother, Roland, for whom she faithfully cared after their parents passed away.
