Eleanor R. Ross

January 16, 1921 - September 04, 2017

Eleanor Ruth Hennessy Pinard Ross, 96, of Westfield, Pa., passed away on Monday, September 4, 2017, at Collins Personal Care Home, in Elkland, Pa.
Born in Haverhill, Mass., on January 16, 1921, she was the daughter of the late John J. Hennessy and Ethel Greenleaf (Hayes) Hennessy. Eleanor graduated from high school in Lewiston, Maine, and from Bliss Business College, also in Lewiston.

She worked in the Maine shipyards during WW II and was later employed in the business department at Saco-Lowell, a Maine textile manufacturing plant, where she fine-tuned her secretarial abilities, as well as her award-winning Gregg shorthand skills. During this time, she also owned and operated her Sea Air rooming house, in the ocean resort town of Old Orchard Beach, Maine. She was later employed as a state court reporter in the bankruptcy court in Portland, Maine, and, moving to Maryland, in 1960, became a federal court reporter in Baltimore in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. After working for many years for two federal judges, The Honorable W. Calvin Chesnut and The Honorable Edward S. Northrop, chief judge, she became the first female reporter of debates hired in the United States Senate, Washington, DC, the position she held until she retired. During retirement, she attended Towson State University in Maryland, receiving her bachelor’s degree and working towards completion of her Master’s degree.
With a long professional life associated with the National Shorthand Reporters Association (National Court Reporters Association), Eleanor took great pride in maintaining proficiency in Gregg shorthand writing, using her amazing skills well into her retirement years. An accomplished equestrienne, she had several beloved horses over the years. A favorite tradition for her was to watch the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, taking special enjoyment when the Preakness Stakes would be run in Maryland. She was an avid fan of ballet and opera and, in fact, taught herself several foreign languages associated with her favorite operas. She loved completing jigsaw puzzles and was rarely seen without her book of crossword puzzles. She also loved her “Boston bulldogs” and her cats, especially Josephine and Rapture. Eleanor was a faithful, lifelong Catholic and most recently was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish, Williamsport, Pa., and St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Elkland, Pa.
Eleanor always considered her family to be her greatest accomplishment. She was so proud of each and every member of her family and certainly enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible. She is survived by her three daughters, Marlene (Gus) Edwards of New Freedom, Pa., Cheryl Whiting of Parkton, Md., and Brenda (Joseph) Cochran of Westfield, Pa. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren from Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Visitation will be at Kenyon Funeral Home, 214 W. Main St, Elkland, Pa., on Monday, September 11, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow immediately at 1 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 111 First St, Elkland, Pa., with Father David Bechtel celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary-Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence. To send an online condolence visit, www.kenyonfuneralhome.com.
