Elsie was born July 9, 1936, in Haverhill, Mass., and passed on August 15, 2017, in Meredith, N.H. Elsie was daughter of Frank and Elsie Hoyt, and sister of Warren and Frank Hoyt.
She married Willard Conklin Gowen and they celebrated 66 years of marriage last September 19. Elsie is survived by her husband, Willard and her children, James Gowen, Katherine Sheppard, and Richard Gowen. She also is survived by a son-in-law, Kelton Sheppard and daughters-in-law, Kathleen Gowen, Vicki Gowen Gray, and Tara Gowen. She had seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Elsie had many passions in her life. While raising her family, she tended a large garden, canning the fruits of her labor for winter months. While walking the colorful fall woods, she would scout out wild mushrooms, and harvest them for cooking. She would also have her binoculars hanging around her neck so she could also indulge in another passion, bird watching. While daughter, Katherine was young, Elsie was a girl scout leader. Her favorite social activities included bowling and the women’s club.
Elsie was passionate about her faith and loved sharing Christ through sign ministries at her church. Her Bible studies were very important to her. She had her own “cookie” ministry that young and old looked forward to every Sunday morning. She always noticed when someone was down, and was a compassionate listener, and shared the love of her savior Jesus with them.
Elsie will be missed by her family and all who knew her.
Elsie will be laid to rest on Sept. 16, at 1 p.m. at Locus Cemetery, Merrimac, Mass.
