Geraldine L. Blais

December 14, 1946 - September 10, 2018

Haverhill - Geraldine L. (Roberts) Blais, 71, of Haverhill, died Monday, September 10, in her home.
Born in Winchester, December 14, 1946, daughter of the late Donald and Geraldine (Spencer) Roberts, Mrs. Blais was educated in the Winchester school system before going on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree from Boston University and her Master’s Degree from Fitchburg State College.
A lifelong lover of learning, Mrs. Blais taught in the Haverhill School System for over 35 years, primarily at Cogswell School and later Bradford Elementary School. She was loved and respected by students and colleagues alike and was proud to be a founding Husky at Bradford “El”.
Later in life, Gerry took full advantage of her travel bug, visiting the Greek Isles, Norway, Holland, France, Wales, the Channel Islands, England, Ireland, Scotland, Nova Scotia, Alaska, Puerto Rico, river cruises down the Seine and the Rhine to visit the Christmas Markets, and countless Caribbean cruises. She loved exploring new places and revisiting old favorites, and her traveling companions will miss her dearly.
Gerry loved reading, and resisted the switch to an e-reader although it did allow her to bring more books on her vacations. Her to-read list never seemed to get shorter, and she always had a good book recommendation precisely tailored to anyone’s preferred genre. She had a dry wit that caught you off guard, and so many of our memories of her include the kind of laughter that made your belly ache.
She is lovingly missed by her daughter, Claire Santarelli and her husband Keith of Wakefield; her son, David Blais and his wife Denelda Norwood of San Diego, Calif.; her sister, Dianne Toolson, and two brothers, Donald Roberts and his wife Karma of Arlington, and Thomas Roberts. She had five grandchildren who brought her immeasurable joy, Quinn, Griffin and Harrison Norwood, and Lorelai and Jillian Santarelli. She also leaves behind a niece, two nephews, and her very faithful companion Harry the cat.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her calling hours on Sunday, September 16, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home, 210 So. Main St., Bradford. Her Funeral will be Monday morning, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. at the Bradford Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Bradford. Contributions in her memory may be made to Friends of the Kimball Library, 5 Academy Ave., Atkinson, NH, 03811, or Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society, 63 Elm St., Salisbury, MA, 01952. Gerry Blais was the teacher you wanted your children to have at Cogswell School. She was loving and tolerant while giving them an academic year filled with new experiences and a love of learning. She was a credit to her profession, a lovely lady and a dear friend. She will be missed, but left many with beautiful memories.

I first met Mrs. Blais when my older daughter had her in second grade at Cogswell. I would hear all about her cat and how kind and loving she was. When my second daughter entered "2B" I signed up to her room mother. I spent every week for two years by her side helping in any small way I could and she was the most lovely person you could ever have the joy of meeting. Her teaching was done with kindness and my daughters and my nieces and nephew remember her, 30 years later, with love and gratitude. Her stories of Ben the cat live with all of us...I have seen her several times since her retirement and always, always, she had that beautiful smile and funny story that myade my heart so happy to b...e near her. I was blessed to have known her and so blessed my children had her in second grade. Rest in peace lovely will be missed forever...Read more

Gerry was my first friend at Cogswell School and we remained friends until she passed. Your mom shared books , stories, lots of cookie recipes parenting advice that I still share with my clients today and many many laughs. It was a rare trip to visit with my family when we didn’t makes special time to get together, usually for great NE breakfasts. It’s been over 40 years and I’ll always treasure her gift of a incredible friendship. My heart is so sad.

Gerry was my favorite teacher at Bradford Elementary. My son was one of her pupils and she was always so patient and kind. We got to be friends and I enjoyed her company on many occasions. She will be remembered for many things, but for me it will be her compassion and great sense of humor.
