San Clemente, CA - Herbert W. De Veaux, 88, of Henderson, Nevada, died Monday, June 11, after a brief illness. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and raised in Andover, Mass.
As a well-known and talented athlete at Punchard High School (now Andover High) he was affectionately known as “Herbie,” winning accolades as a football running back, and as a member of the basketball and baseball teams. He served as co-captain of the football team. He excelled at bowling and also ran track. Inducted into the Punchard/Andover High School Hall of Fame for the class of 1949, this was the beginning of a lifelong love of sports where he received great enjoyment watching PGA great Tiger Woods, as well as professional teams, most notably the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, as well as women’s college basketball, particularly the University of Connecticut. Additionally, he served as high school class president and vice president. He was also a Boy Scout.
Herbert was baptized as a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as Superintendent of the Sunday School. He was also a past president of the Merrimack Valley N.A.A.C.P.
De Veaux earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Management from Northeastern University in 1968, and was enrolled in a master’s program at Boston University. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954.
He completed a distinguished career in the aerospace industry in 1996 after holding positions with Raytheon, Sanders Associates, Avco Industries (now BAE Systems), and Lockheed-Martin. His contribution to the industry included the development of heat shields on the first generation of space shuttles.
Upon his retirement, he taught himself to play the organ, which demonstrated his passion for music and an interest in still photography taking photographs from his travels to the Islands of the Caribbean.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Arline Watson De Veaux; father, Herbert Samuel De Veaux; brother, James Henry De Veaux; and son Michael W. De Veaux. He is survived by his children, Michele E. De Veaux, Marcella “Marcy” De Veaux, and Darrell E. De Veaux along with Darrell’s wife, Lyndara, and two step-grandchildren, Clarke and Siobhan. He is also mourned by Julia (Medley) De Veaux, and Barbara Joeann (Berry) De Veaux as well as a host of friends, nieces, and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his memorial service on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at 1 p.m. The family will receive guests from 12 to 12:45 p.m. prior to the service at Calvary Baptist Church, 13 Ashland Street, Haverhill, MA 01830.
