ANDOVER- John R. Petty, a native Andover resident, age 90, died January 24th at the Holy Family Hospital in Methuen Mass after a short illness. He was the elder son of his deceased parents Frank R. Petty and Arlene R. (Miller) Petty of Andover and was predeceased by his younger brother of Alan of Atkinson, N.H.
He retired from General Electric Co. in 1992 with 41 years of service and was a staff executive as Manager-Administration and Resource Planning and Manager-Navy Programs Finance with the former Medium Steam Turbine, Generator and Gear Products Department in Lynn.
He once served as Chairmen of the Andover Board of Assessors, Treasurer of the Trustees of Punchard Free School, Treasurer of the Andover Home for Aged People and as an Overseer of the Pole Hill Conservation Area. He was also a 70 plus year member of the South Church in Andover.
Born in the Ballardvale section of Andover, he was a 1946 graduate of the former Punchard High School and earned a B.S. degree in Economics at the University of Vermont, Class of 1951. He also completed many graduate courses in management sponsored by G.E.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as Seaman 1st Class aboard the U.S.S. Pocono (AGC 16).
He and his wife were fortunate to have enjoyed extensive world travel during his retirement years.
He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Janet (Morency) Petty, but is survived by his sons Guy R. Petty of Andover, Glen F. Petty and his wife Denise of Epping, NH and daughter Judith F. Daggett and her husband, James M. Daggett of Andover. He also leaves six beloved grandchildren, Brent, Kelsey, and Gary Petty, and Abigail, Bridget and Jason Daggett, along with three nieces and three nephews.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence St., Andover. Services will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the South Church in Andover. Burial will be in the Spring Grove Cemetery.
