Martha's Story

NORTH ANDOVER, MA - Martha (Meeker) Salisbury of North Andover and Venice, Fla., died Sunday, December 17, at the age of 75. She passed peacefully, of bone cancer, at High Pointe Hospice House in Haverhill.
Born September 3, 1942, in Somerville, Martha grew up in Boxford and attended North Andover High School before graduating with the first-ever class at Masconomet Regional High School in Topsfield. She met her husband, Charlie, during their high school years. Married student housing at MIT became their home for the early part of their life together.
Martha was a patriot, a loyal friend, a scholar of plants, and an unwavering Red Sox fan. She devoted much energy to helping other people enjoy North Andover as much as she enjoyed her town. Martha often led volunteer projects related to education, history, horticulture, and town government. She was a Trustee of the Stevens Memorial Library, an officer of the North Andover Garden Club, a Registrar of Voters, and a key member of the town's Festivals Committee.
She worked as a realtor, a floral designer, an office assistant in a medical practice, and in various retail establishments.
When she wasn't tending her garden, her friends, and her projects in North Andover she traveled the world with her family. She made homes in Woodstock and Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; San Jose, Calif.; Hong Kong; and most recently, Venice, Fla. She relished her travels around Europe, the UK, China, Australia, and the Galapagos Islands, and traveled often to visit friends and family. Wherever she went, she made the people around her feel special.
She leaves her husband of 56 years, Charles A. Salisbury; son, Hunt Salisbury and his wife, Laurie of North Andover; daughter, Margot Shewchuk, her husband, John, and their children, Katarina, Annaka, Jack and Lexi of Redmond, Wash.; sister-in-law, Anne Meeker of Rhode Island; brother-in-law, Stephen Salisbury and his wife, Elaine of New Jersey; nieces, Amy Salisbury and Molly Meeker; nephews, David Meeker and Geoffrey Goodell; and the Wakemans of North Andover, including Tracy, Tod; and Brad and Wendy and their daughter, Millicent. She was predeceased by her brother, Bill, and parents, Norman and Mary Meeker.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Martha's favorite causes - Stevens Memorial Library, 345 Main Street, North Andover, and the North Andover Garden Club, P.O. Box 392, North Andover, MA 01845.
A memorial service and celebration of Martha's life will be held on Saturday, December 30, at 1 p.m., at North Parish Church, 190 Academy Road, North Andover.
