Mary E. (Dickson) Hanover, 95, of North Andover, died August 29, 2017, surrounded by family, at Ashland Farm in North Andover.
She was born in Haverhill, December 3, 1921, to the late Alfred B. and Margaret (Donovan) Dickson. She was the widow of James J. Hanover.
Mary was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1939. She lived in North Andover for more than 60 years and was a member of St. Michael's Parish.
Mary was a Crossing Guard in front of Thompson School for 27 years and was a Matron and Special Officer for the North Andover Police Department for many years until her retirement in 1986. Mary was a Past President of the North Andover Women's Club. She was an avid reader, knitter and sports fan. She especially loved watching the Bruins, Red Sox and Patriots.
Mary was predeceased by her brothers, Alfred “Brud” Dickson and Carl Dickson and her sisters, Catherine “Kay” Callahan and Barbara Decoteau.
Mary is survived by her son, James A. Hanover, Sr. of Jericho, Vt. and his late wife Constance "Connie." Her daughter, Maureen Hanover Gaffney and husband, Timothy of Konigstein, Germany and Pasadena, Calif.; grandchildren, Kathy Hanover, Joey (Hanover) Johnson, Jamie Hanover, Julie (Hanover) Royer, Jennifer (Kotce) Stone, David Kotce, Tyler Gaffney and Caitlin Gaffney; 11 great-grandchildren, Cody, Michael, Ryan, Seamus, Liam, Delaney, Chase, Kylee, Cole, Jackson and Allison, and many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third Street, North Andover. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 10 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church, 196 Main Street, North Andover. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery in Haverhill.
