Mary Rita's Story
Mary Rita Markham passed away peacefully at age 92 in North Andover, Mass.
Born May 4, 1925, in Lowell, Mass., and raised in Washington, D.C., Mary Rita earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College in Washington before returning to Massachusetts. A buoyant personality with a sense of fun that matched her work ethic, she worked as an Executive Secretary at DuPont and Gillette companies during the 1960s and 1970s before turning her talents to real estate sales in Marblehead, Mass. She moved to Edgewood Retirement Center, North Andover, in 1999, where she developed lasting friendships and enriched the lives of residents and staff alike.
Mary Rita was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Fitzgerald Markham; father, James E. Markham; brother, James E. Markham, Jr.; sister, Virginia L. Markham; and very special friend, Donald J. Scott. She is survived by brother, Paul F. Markham; sister-in-law, Claire B. Markham; and sister-in-law, Joan B. Markham. Mary Rita is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews with whom she was very close, and by whom she was beloved. Whether taking them for rides back in the sixties in her VW bug, shopping with them at Bonwit Teller in Boston or Loehmann’s in Swampscott, or Facetiming with them on her iPad, she was a constant in her nieces’ and nephews lives. Mary Rita is survived also by her many great-nieces and great-nephews.
