Sarasota, FL - George W. Ainscow, 95, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Andover, Mass., died peacefully Monday, January 28, 2019, at Manor Care Health Facility in Sarasota, Fla.

George is the loving husband of 66 years to Elizabeth (Cookman) Ainscow, who survives him in Fla. He is the son of the late George Ainscow Jr., and Helen (Dreyer) Ainscow. Throughout his life, George was known for his work ethic, love of learning, love of family, and patriotism.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps before the World War II draft, and served as a lieutenant pilot. Following his honorable discharge he attended the University of Arizona on the GI Bill. After graduation he worked as an engineering supervisor at Western Electric in North Andover for 35 years. He raised his six children in Andover with his wife Elizabeth (“Libby”). A member of West Parish Church, he enjoyed singing in the choir. He also sang in a competitive choir in Andover which was active in the 1960s. He was an avid stamp collector throughout his life, and enjoyed reading history books. After retirement from Western Electric, he traveled the world with his wife, and made their home in Florida. He volunteered at a veterans’ cemetery, and tutored illiterate adults.

George is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Virginia and Stephen Sweder of Lawrence; his daughter and son-in-law Sharon and James Liederhouse of Miramar Beach, Fla.; his son and daughter-in-law William and Mary Ainscow of Derry, N.H.; his daughter and son-in-law Catherine and Jonathan Payne of Sarasota, Fla.; his son and daughter-in-law David and Janine Ainscow of Sarasota, Fla.; and his sisters-in-law, Sylvia Hnat of Naples, Fla., and Marilyn Barrow of Somerset, Va. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. George is predeceased by his parents; his parents-in-law Alfred and Rebecca Cookman; his son Douglas Ainscow; his son-in-law Daniel Geiger; his brother-in-law Admiral John Barrow; his brother-in-law Dr. Richard Hnat; and his sister-in-law Dorothy Cookman.
A visitation will be held Friday, February 15, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Burke- Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main St., Andover. A funeral will be held at West Parish Garden Chapel, 129 Reservation Road, Andover, on Saturday, February 16, at 10 a.m. Internment will follow in the West Parish Cemetery.
