Paul's Story

PLAISTOW, NH - Paul M. Rice Sr., 68, of Plaistow, N.H., and formerly of Baltimore, Md., and Seymour, Tenn., died on February 14, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Md., the son of the late John D. and Carmella (Azzaro) Rice, he attended Baltimore schools. A Vietnam veteran, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a private first class, and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon. Following his discharge from the service, he attended Mergenthaler Community Vocational Technical School, and Dundalk Community College.
Mr. Rice owned Paul Rice Mechanical Services, a commercial heating, cooling and refrigeration company, which he operated first in Edgewood, Md., and later in Seymour, Tenn., where he resided for 23 years, before moving to Plaistow, N.H., in 2014. He had also previously been employed at Johns Hopkins Hospital, the Balimore City Department of Education, and several mechanical services, refrigeration and cooling companies.
He was a member of the Marine Corp League of Pigeon, Forge, Tenn., and Maryland, and the Marine Corp Engineers Association. He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce of Hartford County, Md., the Sevier County Tennessee Chamber of Commerce, and an active member at the Sevier County Senior Center and the Gatlinburg, Tenn., Kiwanis Club.
An avid reader, Mr. Rice enjoyed traveling, especially to Hawaii, trips to the beach, and deep sea fishing. A member of the Garden Club, he enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, and also enjoyed woodworking at the Sevier County Senior Center. He was a devoted family man who enjoyed attending and hosting family cookouts and occasions. Christmas was his favorite holiday and he devoted many hours volunteering for the Toys for Tots Program, and he had a great love and appreciation of the value of wildlife and had a great love for his pets.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 26 years, Christine Caudill Rice; two sons and daughters-in-laws, Paul M. and Michelle Rice Jr., of Morristown, Tenn., and Jeremy E. and Stephanie Dunker of Boxford, Mass.; two daughters, Dana M. Rice, of Dallas, N.C., and Kimberley J. Schendel, of Hope, Idaho; three sisters, and a brother-in-law, Donna M. and Randolph Dailey of Dundalk, Md., Teresa B. Binko of S. Baltimore, Md., and Mary Beth Turner of Ohio; four grandchildren, Ethan Dunker, Abigail Dunker, Skyra Schendel and Jacan Schendel; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends may attend Paul's Life Celebration to be held on Monday, February 19, 2018, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will take place in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, N.H., at 2 p.m.
