Ralph Philip's Story
Ralph Philip Vir, 94, of Salem, N.H., passed away peacefully listening to his favorite music while surrounded by his wife, Mary, and family on July 20, 2017.
Ralph was born October 2, 1922, in Biddeford, Maine to William Vir and Beatrice Simineau Vir.
While serving in the Navy during WWII, Ralph met his soulmate, Mary Agostino and the two were wed on August 24, 1944. Ralph and Mary spent 74 beautiful years in love and built a family that adored them. They were twice honored as the longest living married couple in Salem. Ralph worked at Raytheon as an engineer for over 30 years. He was a proud father and grandfather who dedicated most of his time cheering on and attending every family event. He was a skilled carpenter who enjoyed swimming, running, photography, music, and dancing with his wife.
Ralph leaves behind his beloved wife, Mary of 74 years; children, Bruce Vir, Phyllis Mertz and husband, Ken, Donna Barbera and husband, Vincent; his sister, Rachel Paquette; grandchildren, Chris Mertz, Kendra Mertz, Aimee Mertz O'Connell, Nicole Vir Shorter, Heather Vir Hildebrandt, and Jason Barbera; 9 great-grandchildren; and an extended family who will all miss him dearly.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, July 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Goundrey & Dewhirst Funeral Home, 42 Main St., Salem, NH 03079. A funeral Mass will be at St. Joseph's Church Wednesday, July 26, at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow at Pine Grove cemetery in Salem, N.H. with full military honors.
