Text size

Rene Guilmet 82, of Middleboro Mass., passed away Thursday, January 25, surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer. He was born and raised in Lawrence, Mass., and attended Central Catholic High School where he was a shining star on the football team. Rene married his childhood sweetheart, Cecile (Demers) Guilmet, in 1957, and just celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss this past June. He was a proud member of the U.S. Navy, and served on the Cassin Young. He was employed by Gerber Products for more than 30 years, and a very active member of Sacred Heart Parish, in Lawrence, for many years. After retirement, Rene moved to Middleboro Mass., to Oak Point, where he began the next chapter of his wonderful life. He formed many cherished friendships. He loved to bowl with the club he created there. He also enjoyed shooting pool and playing cards. His kind generous soul was extremely active in volunteering for Helping Hands. Rene was a wonderful funny man who enjoyed sharing stories and telling jokes. To know him, was to love him! He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He coached all of his five children in various sports and activities, and never missed a game. Rene enjoyed life to the fullest, and shared that joy with everyone he met. He was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Red Sox and Patriots from the comfort of his own home, while dressed in his lucky team attire. Rene is survived by his wife Cecile (Demers) Guilmet; and his five children, Stephen Guilmet, of Attleboro, John Guilmet, and wife, Nancie, of Andover, Linda (Guilmet) Arsenault, and husband, Rob, of Lawrence, Sharon (Guilmet) Fries, and husband, Robert, of Bridgewater, Brian Guilmet, and wife, Jacquelyn, of Hanson. He was also the proud Pepere to eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also survived by his brother, Alfred, and wife, Barbara; brothers-in-law, Father Gerard Demers, and Norman Demers, and his wife, Joyce.
