Richard J.'s Story
Richard J. Bennett, longtime resident of Andover, died peacefully on Saturday, October 21, 2017, after a lengthy illness. He was the loving husband of Joann (Guttadauro) Bennett. Besides his wife, Richard is survived by his nephew, Keith Littlefield and his wife, Karen, and their children, Khloe and Kasey of Lynnfield.
Founder and President of Andover Corporation of Salem, N.H., Richard grew the business from a two-man operation in his garage to a world recognized leader in the design and manufacture of state of the art optical filters, coatings and related products. Andover Corporation’s customers include universities, Fortune 500 companies, defense contractors and government entities both in the US and internationally. Richard was also an active member of a number of optical trade associations.
Richard was honored in 2005 when he was knighted into the Brotherhood of St. Christoph, the world’s oldest charitable organization headquartered in Arlberg, Austria, whose members include most members of the Royal Families of Holland and Norway.
A decorated Navy pilot and worldwide traveler, Richard was also an accomplished skier and an avid tuna fisherman. He held a Captain’s license from the U.S Coast Guard and owned and operated the vessel “Double Fault” out of Gloucester with his wife, Joann, for many years.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, October 26, 2017, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street, Methuen. His funeral Mass will take place at Saint Augustine Parish, 43 Essex St., Andover, at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 27, 2017. Burial will follow in West Parish Garden Cemetery, Andover.
