North Andover, MA - Rita "Saint Rita" Crane, 89, of North Andover, passed peacefully at High Point House in Haverhill after a short hospice stay. She spent her last days peacefully, surrounded by family.
Born on June 19th, 1929 in North Andover, daughter of James Farrell and Rose Dubois Farrell, she attended Johnson High School, graduating in 1947.
Mrs. Crane was proudest of her large and extended family. She married Sergeant John Richard (Dick) Crane in 1952 and raised her family on Elm Street in N. Andover. She raised 7 children, often on her own due to her husband' s professional commitments.
After raising her first 6 children to School Age, Rita returned to school to pursue a career in Education. While mothering 6 children, Rita completed her degree at Lowell State Teacher's College, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1971. As Rita prepared to enter her professional career, she was gifted with her 7th child Rob and decided that Motherhood was her true calling. She worked at the Andover/N. Andover YMCA as Membership Secretary for numerous years.
In her later years, in order to spend more time with Dick, Rita developed a passion for golf. She enjoyed playing, as well as watching the professionals.
Shortly after her husband's retirement, Dick suffered a heart stoppage after one of their evening walks in the Elm Street neighborhood. Rita performed CPR on him, saving him until the paramedics were able to arrive on scene. Because of her efforts, Dick was able to survive and enjoy an additional 16 years with his wife and family.
Rita is survived by her children, Cathy Dainowski and her husband, Jack, of North Andover, Patty Heenan and her husband, John, of North Andover, Jack Crane and partner Kathleen Kehoe of Hampton, N.H., Jamie and his wife, Janine, of Methuen, Sgt. Tim Crane and Partner Michelle Logomasini of North Andover, Don Crane of Delray Beach, Fla., and Rob Crane and his wife, Danielle, of North Andover.
Rita was also "Nana" to 10 grandchildren, Tim, Jeff, Patrick and Evan Gaffny, Adam Dainowski, and Amanda, John, Donovan, Logan and Ian Crane; as well as great-grandchildren, Colin, Colby and Caleb Gaffny, Kade & JJ Gaffny, and Ryan & Tyler Gaffny.
She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 17th, at 10 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, North Andover. Burial will follow in Ridgewood Cemetery, North Andover. Family and friends may call on Thursday, May 16th, 4-8 p.m. at Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third St., North Andover.
In Lieu of Flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the High Point House, 360 North Avenue, Haverhill, MA 01830.
