PEABODY, MA - Robert Lawrence Means, 94, formerly of Georgetown, Mass., passed away at Brooksby Village, Peabody, on Saturday, January 20, 2018. Robert was born on January 29, 1923, to Alice Hubbard Means and Robert Whitman Means. He served in the Pacific during WWII as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College ('46). He retired from a career in capital campaigns for national and regional not-for-profit organizations, colleges and schools. Robert was past Sr. Vice Commander and a member of the VFW Post 7608 Board of Directors in Georgetown. Robert was an award-winning rock gardener and longstanding member of the New England Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society.
He is survived by loving wife, Joan Braddon Means; son Robert and his wife Christine Bell; son Jonathan and his wife Marlene; daughter Martita; grandchildren, Alastair-Ian Means and his wife Sarah, and Meaghan Means; great-grandchildren, Margaret, Robert and Aileen. He was predeceased by his youngest daughter Lucinda.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 124 River Road, Topsfield, MA 01983. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Robert L. Means Sr. may be made to the Essex County Greenbelt Association, 82 Eastern Avenue, Essex, MA. 01929.
