Robert Nicholas Merola

July 16, 1929 - July 31, 2018

Andover - A friend said of Robert Merola, "His life was the American dream writ large."
Robert, 89, a resident of Andover for 55 years, passed away July 31 after a period of declining health.
Robert married his high school sweetheart, Joan (Hibbard), and they were happily married for 61 years.
Robert was a star fullback for the 1947 Everett High football team highlighted by the showdown against Lynn Classical in front of 24,000 people at the Manning Bowl. The Boston Globe wrote, "Everett has to stop Harry Agganis and Classical has to stop classy Everett fullback Bob Merola."
Robert joined the Marines after high school and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the "Chosin Few," fighting in the famed Korean Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, some of the fiercest fighting in U.S. military history.
He graduated from Northeastern and taught computer science for 40 years, mostly at Shawsheen Regional High.
First and foremost, Robert was a family man. He loved his wife and four children: Robert Jr. of Methuen, Debbie of Andover, Darlene of North Andover and John of Andover. He also leaves his brother, Richard, and beloved grandchildren Elissa, Nicholas, Christian and Michael.
He volunteered for years in the Andover Junior Football League and Andover Little League and was a communicant at St. Augustine's in Andover.
Visitation will be on Monday, August from 4 to 8 p.m. at Conte Funeral Home, 28 Florence Street, Andover, MA. The Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine's Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover. Burial will follow in St. Augustine's Cemetery in Andover. Remembrances may be made in Robert's memory to Alzheimer's research or the Wounded Warrior Project.
