Ronald J. Wedge

November 12, 1944 - January 03, 2018

Ronald J. Wedge Haverhill, MA - Ronald J. Wedge, 74, of Haverhill, Mass., died after a brief illness on Jan 3, 2019, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Ron was born in Lawrence, Mass., the son of the late Eastman H. Wedge and Helen ( LaCharity) Wedge. He was a 1964 graduate of No. Andover High School, and was well known for his skills as an athlete in football and wrestling. He graduated from N.E. Barber School in Boston. After working for several area barber shops, he opened his own shop, Century Hairstyling, which he operated for many years in No. Andover. In later years, he worked as a bus driver for the MVRTA until retirement.
Ron loved spending time with his grandchildren who were the light of his life, bringing him much joy. He also enjoyed antiquing, trips to the beach, gardening, vacationing in No. Conway and Martha's Vineyard and cheering on the No. Andover wrestling and football teams. He was a true "townie" who loved visiting friends and family at local No. Andover coffee shops to share a newspaper and share stories of No. Andover history.
One of Ron's greatest passions was engaging youth in sports of any kind. Brian Urquhart, a Methuen wrestling coach who had recently started a youth wrestling program, inspired Ron to consider starting a program in No. Andover. Ron immediately began talking this up with fellow wrestlers and customers, Steve Henry and Dan Healey. In 1978, they co-founded the NABC youth wrestling program, which continues to this day.
Ron is survived by the love of his life, Lynn (Garry) Wedge of Haverhill, Mass.; his son Ron E. Wedge of Haverhill, Mass.; brothers and sisters Doreen Drigian and her husband Bryon of Hampton, N.H., Dorothy Fortin of Exeter, N.H., and Kenneth Wedge and his wife Donna of No. Andover; daughter-in-law Julie Hipke and her husband Jim; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; mother and father-in-law Kenneth and Norma Garry; brother and sisters-in-law Kenneth Garry Jr., Alice Twombly and Robin Garry; many nieces and nephews who were very special to him. He was predeceased by his sister Gloria (Wedge) Connelly; and brother Harold E. Wedge.
