Ruth's Story

EXETER, NH - Ruth P. (Walters) Horton, age 87, of Exeter, N.H., and former longtime resident of Amesbury, was reunited with her beloved husband, Joseph L. Horton, on Tuesday evening, February 20, 2018, when she passed
at the Exeter Rehabilitation Center. She previously resided some years at Langdon Place Assisted Living in Exeter.
Born in Amesbury on March 21, 1930, she was one of four children of the late Ronald A. and Anne A. (Murphy) Walters. She graduated from Amesbury High School in 1947. Beginning in 1948, with her passion for flying, Ruth did was what needed to get her pilots license and fulfill her dream of flying
She worked for 26 years at Northern Essex Community College, as the executive secretary to the president of the College, John Dimity. Ruth earned an Associates Degree in 1979 after attending night classes at Northern Essex.
She was a longtime active member of the Bartlett Museum, an organization that was very dear to her heart.
Ruth and her late husband Joseph L. Horton, loved to travel to Pop's Motel in Key West, as well as Oklahoma, and North Carolina, to visit her siblings. Never having had any children, they were especially fond of their nieces and nephews, and treated them like their own children.
She leaves behind her only brother, David B. Walters and wife Sharon of Holly Springs, N.C.; and her many nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Maud C. Deorocki and Martha A. Oertel.
An hour of visitation will be held Friday, March 2, 2018, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury, immediately followed by services and burial in Union Cemetery, Amesbury. Donations in her memory may be made to the Bartlett Museum, P.O. Box 692, Amesbury, MA 01913.
