LYNNFIELD, MA - Stephan S. Captain of Lynnfield, Mass., passed away peacefully in his home on February 13, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He courageously battled colon cancer for two years.
Stephan was born in Eressos, Lesvos, Greece, on November 26, 1934, the oldest child of the late Stavros and Filisia Xenelis Kapetanios and brother to the late Lena Papailiou. He immigrated to the United States in 1947 and proudly became a United States citizen settling in Portland, Conn. In 1954, he graduated Portland High School and upon graduation, he joined the Airborne Division of the United States Army. Under the GI Bill he matriculated at The University of Connecticut and in 1961 graduated from the School of Business Administration.
In 1962 he met and married his beloved Ekaterina (Katy) Tsouvalis Captain of Mystras, Sparti and the two were married for 55 years. Stephan is also survived by his two loving daughters, Felicia and her husband, Matthias Kiehm of Weston, and Demetria and her husband, Christopher Lawson of Boston, and two cherished grandchildren, Maximilian and Ekaterina Kiehm.
A true entrepreneur, he founded the restaurant chain, Captain Pizza, and established several locations in the Boston area, including Peabody, Andover, North Andover, Burlington, Lowell, Haverhill, Lawrence, Methuen, Brockton, and most recently in Middleton. He also opened restaurants in Chicago and San Diego.
He was so proud of his Greek heritage and to be an American citizen.
Stephan's greatest passion was spending time with family and friends and especially his grandchildren. He created an inseparable relationship with Maximilian and Ekaterina and was an incredible mentor to both. He cherished his many special trips with them to his beloved Eressos. Stephan loved Greek music and dancing, sports and politics. He was a long-time member of St. Vasilios Church in Peabody, the St. Vasilios Men's Club, as well as the Hermes Men's Club.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to visitation on Sunday at the Mackey Funeral Home, 128 S. Main St., Route 114, Middleton, MA, from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral service on Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody, Mass. Burial at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park.
