U.S. Air Force Technical Sgt. Robert E.'s Story
U.S. Air Force Technical Sgt. Robert E. Hamel (Ret.), 94, a former longtime resident of Newburyport, Mass., and Raymond, N.H., died September 23, 2017 in Dunedin, Fla.
Born in Newburyport, son of the late Alfred and Clara (LaPlante) Hamel, he was a member of the Newburyport High School, Class of 1941.
A veteran of W.W.II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War, Mr. Hamel served first in the U.S. Army Air Corps which later became the United States Air Force. He retired as a Technical Sergeant in 1966 after 24 years of service and transferred to the Air Force Reserves. He was a recipient of several medals and commendations including the Good Conduct Medal with 5 Bronze Loops, American Campaign Medal, EAME Medal with silver star, the World War Two Victory Medal, the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, UN Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, the Air Force Longevity Service Award with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Mr. Hamel worked as a store manager for the J.M. Fields Department Store in Andover, Mass., and later as a manager of the former BayBank branches in Merrimac and Andover. He was last employed at the Merrimack Valley Textile Museum in Lowell, Mass.
A longtime member of the Civil Air Patrol, Mr. Hamel held a private pilot’s license and was also a Ham Radio Operator for many years.
Mr. Hamel enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling in his younger years, dining out, Saturday night Ballroom Dancing, and photography. He also was a collector of Golf memorabilia and was a fan of military march music, especially all of the John Phillip Sousa compositions.
The husband of the late Natalie (Felker) Hamel, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his four daughters and sons-in-law, Diane M. and James Ferraiola of Salem, N.H., Susan E. Robinson of Amesbury, Mass., Linda R. McCartney of Bedford, N.H., and Peggy A. and Mark Aguiar of Bedford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert E., Jr, and June Hamel of St. Stephens, NB, Canada, and Brian E. and Lorna Hamel of Bellevue, Idaho; a sister-in-law, Elaine (Felker) Dupre of Haverhill, Mass.; and 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday, October 12, 2017, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. His funeral will be held on Friday, October 13, at 10 a.m. in Brookside Chapel, followed by burial with military honors in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Amesbury, Mass.
