ANDOVER, MA - William E. Nichols (Bill), of Andover, Mass., peacefully passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2018, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He was born on February, 28, 1931, in Weymouth, Mass. Bill attended the Pike School, Phillips Academy, Dartmouth College, and Tuck School of Business. In 1962, he married Gwendolyn (Barrington) Nichols, and together they had two children, Mark William, and Scott Jeffrey.
While Bill served as an ensign in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves, in 1955, he began working at The Andover Companies at the age of 18 as a temporary worker in 1949, and then began his formal career as a trainee in 1954. Over six decades with the organization, he held various positions, becoming President and Treasurer in 1979, and later, CEO, and Chairman of the Board.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gwendolyn Nichols; two sons, Mark, and his wife, Karen, of North Andover, Mass., and Scott, and his wife, Soraya, of Jupiter, Fla.; a sister, Barbara (Nichols) Kurth, of Andover, Mass.; and five grandchildren. He will always be remembered by those who loved him deeply.
A memorial service organized by Conte Funeral Home will be held at Christ Church, 33 Central St, Andover, MA 01810 on Friday, February 9, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to scholarships at Phillips Academy, where William was a member of the class of 1949.
