Text size

Beatrice J. Collins, 92, longtime Andover and North Andover resident, died peacefully on June 30, 2017, at the Meadows Heath Center.
Bea was born in Bisbee, Ariz. on January 16, 1925, to Benjamin and Agnes (Crawford) Jean of Bisbee.
She graduated from Mesa Union High School, Mesa, Ariz. in 1943.
Bea worked as a valued circulation manager for the Arizona Republic and Gazette before enlisting in the U.S. Navy Waves. She did not serve, due to the end of World War II in 1945.
Bea attended Arizona State University (ASU). While at ASU, on a blind date, Bea met and fell in love with GI Student, Roger W. Collins of Andover, Mass. They were married in Mesa, in 1949, and returned to Andover with daughter, Nancy, to live there full-time in 1953. Daughter, Christianne was born in 1956. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Bea worked outside the home as an executive secretary for Raytheon, the Mitre Corporation, and Reid-Meredith, Inc. In 1964, she entered the real estate business as a sales person. In 1965, Bea and Roger started their Andover family business, B.J. Collins Realty. Always interested in and honored to volunteer for local issues, in 1975, Bea became the president of the then Women’s Division of the Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. In 1977, Bea was elected the first woman president of the Greater Lawrence Board of Realtors, serving two terms. Bea’s greatest joys were derived from being with her family, especially grandson, Sam. She loved spending time traveling extensively with Roger, watching ASU football, discussing politics of the day, and listening to classical, jazz, and big band music. Over the last 17 years, Bea fell in love with her daughter and son-in-law’s farm in New Hampshire, enjoying family holidays and working hard on projects there many times throughout the year. Her favorite chores were navigating the tractor to mow the pastures and lawn, and holding the horses for hoof grooming.
Survivors who will greatly miss her include daughters, Nancy Collins and husband, Michael Rendish (North Sandwich, N.H.), and Christianne Humphrey and husband, James (Cambridge, Mass.); grandchildren, Samuel B. Humphrey (Cambridge, Mass.), Marc A. Rendish (Chelmsford, Mass.), and Meredith R. Dooney (Pepperell, Mass.), five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Bea was predeceased by husband, Roger; her parents; as well as by her sisters, Erna Craighead and Millie Boomer.
A Memorial Service will take place at 4 p.m., Thursday, July 13, at Edgewood Retirement Center Auditorium, 575 Osgood St., North Andover, MA. Burial is the same day at Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover.
