Donald A.'s Story
Donald A. Purstell, 83, formerly of Colonie, N.Y., died Sunday, June 4, 2017, after an extended and defiant battle with cancer.
Don was born in Troy, N.Y., to the late Francis and Florence (Morrone) Purstell.
He was married to Patricia Anne (Jason) for 60 years. They raised five sons and a daughter in the Colonie area before moving to Derry, N.H., and then retiring to Kissimmee, Fla.
Don attended Watervliet High School and served in the Navy as a Corpsman in Japan during the Korean War. He graduated from Ithaca College, with a physical education degree. He then embarked on a career in the newspaper industry. After a 20-year tenure with the Times-Union, he finished his career with the Eagle Tribune in Lawrence.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially his time at his fishing camp on the Connecticut River in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. In addition to his passion with fishing, he enjoyed golf, poker, as well as his annual attendance at the Saratoga race track.
Don, a devoted husband and father, is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Kevin Purstell of Burnt Hills, N.Y., Leszlie Purstell of York, Maine and Carlsbad, Calif., Mark Purstell of Nyantic, Conn., Thomas Purstell of Cohoes, N.Y., Paul Purstell of Chitre, Panama, Donald (Tony) Purstell of Lake Mary, Fla.; grandchildren, Megan, Amber, Kaari, Brandon, and Austin; brother, Frank of Waynesboro, Va.; and sister, Anne Marie Dunn of Watervliet, N.Y. and Port St. Lucie, Fla.
A memorial service and Mass will be held Monday, June 19 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Crescent, 86 Church Hill Rd., Waterford, NY 12188. Burial will follow at 12 p.m. at the Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, N.Y. Memorial contributions in Don’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
