Dorothy E.'s Story
Dorothy Elizabeth (Hidden) Hunt, 97, died on July 13, 2017, at Maplewood of Cheshire County in Westmoreland, N.H., where she had resided for the past six years.
She was born in Georgetown, Mass., on December 25, 1919, the fifth of six children of Walter Harold Hidden and Mary Elizabeth (Roberts).
Dorothy was an 11th generation of the Hidden family of the Newburyport line. Other names included in her New England ancestry are Pike, Rogers, Martin, and Roberts. She attended the Georgetown schools and the Byfield Parish Church. Georgetown was her home for 80 of her 97 years.
Married to the late Wilfred Ernest Hunt, they raised eight children. Their marriage ended after 41 years with his sudden death in February 1979. Following his death, she continued with the care of her mother who also lived to be nearly 98 years old.
A now widowed but self-reliant woman, she began a 15-year career as a cook at the Seaview Nursing Home in Rowley, Mass., retiring in 1994 at the age of 75. She took great pride in a dependable work ethic, in helping others, and in economic independence. Family gatherings, both large and small, and traveling with children brought her great happiness.
Dorothy lived for 13 years at Trestle Way Senior Housing Complex in Georgetown, Mass., where she had many friends. She was honored, in 2007, as Tenant of the Year for her helpfulness and contribution to life at the complex. In 2011, she moved to Westmoreland, N.H., where she received loving care. Throughout her long life, she is remembered as a reserved, compassionate, kind, polite, thoughtful, generous, self-reliant lady.
She is survived by her children, Richard Hunt and his wife, Judy of Rockwall, Texas; Carol Austin and husband, Russell of Westmoreland, N.H., Claire Gauthier and husband, Gerald of West Franklin, N.H., Cheryl Zeiner and husband, Rob of Reading, Pa., Cynthia Lahman and husband, HS of Framingham, Mass., and Charlene Doss and husband, Steve of Goldsboro, N.C..; over 50 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; siblings, Edward Hidden, Ruth Willard, Eleanor Newcomb Cumming, Raymond Hidden, and Alice Rice; children, Robert Hunt and Cathy Gale; grandsons, Christopher Gale and Douglas Austin.
Services, according to her wishes, will be held at the Conte-Giamberardino Family Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant St., Georgetown at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, with an opportunity to meet with the family at 10 a.m. prior to the celebration of life service. Burial will follow at the South Byfield, Mass. Cemetery.
