Eliza's Story

Eliza (Popescu-Zorica) Ian, 94, a resident of the Methuen Village Assisted Living Center for the past five years, died on Friday, August 25, 2017.
Born in Bucharest, Romania, daughter of the late Nicolaie and Calypso Popescu-Zorica, she was educated in Bucharest and later graduated from Bucharest Law School. As a young woman, she practiced law in partnership with her late father. After the Communist takeover of the country, she worked as a French translator for the government run press.
Mrs. Ian and her late husband, Eugene, escaped from Communist Romania in 1968, and found asylum in the United States, bringing their son, Andrew, to this country two years later, when they began a new life of freedom together.
Mrs. Ian worked in New York City as a French translator for the Museum of Modern Art. After moving to Nokomis, Fla., in 1979, she was employed as the office manager at an architectural firm in Sarasota.
Fluent in five languages and an avid reader, Mrs. Ian also enjoyed classical music, gardening, traveling to Europe every year and returning to New England numerous times to visit her family.
Predeceased by her husband, Eugene Ian, in 2012, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Debbie Ian of Plaistow, N.H.; a grandson, Eric Ian of Bozeman, Mont.; a granddaughter, Jaime Lyn Daley of Brunswick, N.Y.
Relatives and friends are invited to Mrs. Ian’s Life Celebration to be held on Thursday, August 31, 2017, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Plaistow, NH. Her funeral will be held on Friday, September 1, 2017, at 8 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in Holy Angels Church of Saint Luke the Evangelist Parish, Plaistow, N.H.
