Ernest J.'s Story
Ernest J. Dowling, Jr., 87, of Kingston, N.H., passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2017, in the Exeter Center.
He was born in Lawrence, a son of the late Ernest J. and Elizabeth (Kimmond) Dowling, Sr. He was raised in Methuen, and attended St. Rita's and St. Mary's Schools and graduated from Central Catholic High School.
Upon graduation, Ernest volunteered to join the U.S. Army and serve under the flag of the United Nations during the Korean War on August 24, 1949. During his service, he participated in three landings including Inchon on Sept. 15, 1950, the Battle at Chosin Reservoir, and the Liberation of Seoul. He was honorably discharged Sept. 17, 1952, and was awarded many decorations, medals, and citations including Korean Service Medal with six Bronze Campaign Stars, the U.N. Service Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation.
Upon his discharge, Ernest became a machinist and successful tool and die maker for Western Electric/AT&T for 27 years. He married Jeannine Asselin in 1957 and they resided in Salem, N.H. for 38 years where they raised their family. Ernest was a 32-year member of the American Legion Post #0034 in Plaistow, N.H. and a life member at VFW Post #1088 in Kingston, N.H. His interests included camping and snowmobiling for many years at Lake Winnipesaukee. He also enjoyed bringing friends together to lampoon comical plays and skits of popular fairy tales.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jeannine (Asselin) Dowling; his daughter, Karen Dowling Yeaton and her husband, Mark; a son, Christopher Dowling and his wife Jennifer (Milone); three granddaughters, Sarah, Kathryn, and Alexandria; and his sister, Dorothea Humphries. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Robert Scot; a daughter, Kim Marie; two sisters, Marguerite "Peggy" VanDoorne, and Jane Marshall; and a brother, Bernard Dowling.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem. A funeral service will follow at 12 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, 329 Main St., Salem.
