H. Jerome's Story
H Jerome Crampton, MD, formerly of Andover, Mass., Marblehead, Mass., and Concord, N.H., passed away peacefully March 26, 2017 after a long illness at the age of 92. Dr. Crampton, Jerry as he was known, was an ophthalmologist in private practice in Lawrence and Andover, Mass. for over 35 years. After a short, trial stint at retirement, Jerry returned to work as an ophthalmic research consultant in dry eye syndrome at Ora, Inc. in Andover, until the age of 85.
Jerry will be remembered as a caring and empathetic physician, voracious reader, sports enthusiast and proud family man. He was always the consummate gentleman, and the moral guiding light for all who knew him.
Married for 52 years to his wife, Leslie Harris Crampton, who predeceased him, he is mourned by his daughter, Lindsay Crampton MD and her husband, Richard Greene MD of Tyringham, Scott Crampton and his wife, Kimberly of Summerfield, N.C.; Chris Crampton and his wife, Machele of Tampa, Fla., John Crampton and his wife, Jennifer of Concord, N.H. He leaves his beloved grandchildren Brenden, Taylor, Andrew, Elizabeth, Stephen, Colin Crampton, Mark Greene, stepgrandson, Shane, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Robert Crampton, and Paul Crampton and his wife Marilyn.
Jerry was born in Woburn on October 19, 1924 the son of Henry and Mary Maloney Crampton. During WWll he initially served in the The Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) in engineering at the University of Maine. He was ultimately deployed to the European theater, assigned to the 1st Airborne Army Division. At war’s end he resumed his education at Boston University School of Medicine graduating in 1953. His ophthalmology training was at the University of Pennsylvania and Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. He began his private practice in Lawrence in 1958. During his later years he and wife, Leslie enjoyed traveling with their dear friends Clayton and Evelyn Crotch.
The family requests that those who want to honor Jerry’s memory may send donations to the New Hampshire Veterans Home, 139 Winter St, Tilton, NH 03276. The care and love given to Jerry by the staff of NHVH during his final days was extraordinary and greatly appreciated by his family. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
