Irene E. (Kohl)'s Story
Irene E. (Kohl) Keen, 96, of Haverhill and formerly of North Andover, died peacefully April 27, 2017, at the Stevens Bennett Home for Ladies in Haverhill. Irene was born in Lawrence on April 24, 1921, daughter of the late Robert and Ida (Kunert) Kohl. She was a graduate of the Rollins School and Lawrence High School, Class of 1939. She was an 80 year member the German Presbyterian Church in Lawrence which later became the United Presbyterian Church, and in 2004 she joined the Christian Fellowship Church of the Merrimack Valley. Irene taught sewing at Singer Sewing Machine Company for many years and later retired from Bay State National Bank.
Irene loved to sew for herself and for her family and was an avid reader who read an average of 100 books a year. She developed many close friends over the years and assisted many as she grew older with rides to appointments and daily activities. She obtained her driver’s license in her 40s, but grew to love driving and take her three grandchildren on many wonderful adventures. Irene’s favorite quote was, “I love my grandchildren to death.”
Besides her parents, Irene was predeceased by her sister, Roberta Spinney of California. She is survived by her son, Kenneth Keen and his wife, Ruth of North Andover; grandchildren, Kristin Watson and her husband, Rev. James Watson, Cheryl Gillen and her husband, Edward and Robert Keen and his wife, Tracy; also survived by great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and fiancé Tiffany, Kerrie, Samantha and husband Mark, Christopher, Caleb, Jacob, Julia and Aaron; and great-great-grandchildren, Max and Isabella.
