James L.'s Story

Text size

James “Jimmy” D’Angelo, 78, of Wolfeboro, N.H., and longtime Andover resident, died October 8, 2017, at the Mountain View Community in Ossipee, N.H. He died peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a hard-fought battle with congestive heart disease. He was a man of strong faith and went home to be with God. Jimmy was born in Lawrence, Mass., to the late James G. and Louise (Cascone) D’Angelo. He grew up attending St. Augustine School in Andover. He graduated from Phillips Academy Andover in 1957 and the University of Virginia in 1961, and was a successful All American football player. Jimmy began his career as a stock broker in Boston with Merrill Lynch and retired from Paine Webber in Andover in 1995. He was an avid golfer, and through the years was a member of the Andover Country Club, Indian Ridge, and Haverhill Country Club. When he retired in 1995, Jimmy moved up to Wolfeboro, N.H., making his vacation home his permanent residence and dedicating all his time to his family.
From a young age, you could find Jimmy playing golf on any day that ended in “Y.” When he wasn’t playing golf, he was sitting at the piano, riding in his 1931 DeSoto, attending one of his grandkids’ games or recitals, or driving his boat on Lake Winnipesaukee. His family will miss his jokes, family parties at the camp, endless dancing and singing around the piano, cookouts on the lake, his incomparable sense of humor, and most of all his generous heart.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Wolfeboro, N.H.; his children, Mary Ann Rex and husband, John of Andover, Mass., James C. D’Angelo of Manchester, N.H., and Michael D’Angelo and wife, Andrea of Methuen, Mass. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Kristina, Katie, and Johnny Rex, and Sophia and Mikey D’Angelo. He is also survived by his brother, Samuel D’Angelo and wife, Emma Gene of Atlanta, Ga.; his nieces and nephews, and several cousins who were also some of his closest friends.
Family and friends may visit on Friday, October 13, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third Street, North Andover, MA 01845. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine’s Church in Andover, Mass., on Saturday, October 14, at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the West Parish Cemetery in Andover. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Lazarus House Ministries, P.O. Box 408, Lawrence, MA 01842.
