John T. "Jack"'s Story

Mr. John T. “Jack” Sweeney, 90 years of Swampscott, died on Thursday, October 5, 2017 peacefully at home. He was the husband of Mrs. Barbara A. (Connolly) Sweeney. Jack was born in Providence, R.I., the son of the late P. John and Elizabeth (Daley) Sweeney. He was raised in Providence and was a graduate of LaSalle High School. Jack was also a graduate of Providence College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Business. He had lived in Swampscott for the past 50 years.

Mr. Sweeney was a longtime Bank Officer at Lynn 5 Cents Savings. Jack was an Army Air Corp veteran of WWII and served in Hamilton Field, Calif. He was an alumni of Providence College and an avid follower of Providence College Sports. While at LaSalle Jack ran track. He was very involved in the community. He was President and member of the Board of Directors Lynn Visiting Nurse Association, a member of the Lynn Lions Club, Executive Director and Board Member of the Lynn Chamber of Commerce, and he was a member of the Board of Directors at Family and Children’s Services. Jack was on the Lynn Cancer Board, the JOI Board as president and past Board Member, Swampscott Little League as a player’s agent and coach. Jack was active in St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott as a Lector, Senior Acolyte and Eucharistic Minister. For many years, Jack worked for the Solimine Funeral Home. He was always the perfect gentleman. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and his family was most important to him.
In addition to his wife, Barbara with whom he spent 63 years of marriage he leaves his children, John M. Sweeney and his wife, Kate of Duxbury, James A. Sweeney of West Roxbury, Barbara E. Rougier and her husband, Thomas of Salem, Carolyn L. Johnston and her husband, William of Hampstead, N.H.; his grandchildren, Patrick, Katherine, Anne, William and Erin. He also leaves his sisters-in-law, Stasia Sweeney and Mary Redmond and several nieces and nephews and countless friends. He is the brother of the late Alice Kearney and Robert Sweeney. He was the brother-in-law of the late William Kearney, Patrick Redmond, Betty and Tom Carlton.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 9 a.m. from the Solimine Funeral Home, 67 Ocean Street (Route 1A), Lynn followed by a funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott at 10 a.m. Burial in Swampscott Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church, 174 Humphrey Street, Swampscott, MA 01907.
