Michael James's Story
Michael James Bucuzzo, age 90, a lifelong resident of Haverhill, died Sunday afternoon, September 24, 2017, at Lawrence General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of nearly 65 years of Madeline N. (Cusano) Bucuzzo, who died April 16, 2014.
One of two sons of the late Rocco and Caroline (Miller) Bucuzzo, he was born in Haverhill, December 28, 1926, and attended Haverhill Trade School.
He served with the Merchant Marines during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post in Haverhill for many years.
Mr. Bucuzzo was the owner of the former Hannah’s Market in the Riverside section of Haverhill. As the skilled butcher, he served up the freshest sliced cold cuts as well as any cut of meat that a customer desired. He worked at Northshore Vending as well as Western Electirc before and after owning Hannah’s Market and at Butcher Boy Market.
In his spare time, he loved creating one-of-a-kind stained glass pieces for his family and friends who were always amazed at his workmanship and artistic flare. Playing cards was always a favorite, be it “poker,” “45s,” “Black Jack” or whatever, especially when winning. Mike always looked forward to trips to FoxWoods and Mohegan Sun, taking his chance with “Lady Luck” and loving every minute of the chance of winning big. After his retirement, Mike spent much of his time working the flea markets in the local communities. He was also a longtime parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church in Haverhill’s Riverside section.
Mike’s dedication to his family had no limits. The countless memories of a life lived with gusto, filled with good times and bad, with much wisdom, understanding and appreciation, and above all else, endless love, will forever warm the hearts of all who were part of his life.
Predeceased by his loving wife, Madeline and his devoted daughter, Mary A. Bucuzzo, he is survived by his son, Michael R. Bucuzzo of Lawrence; his brother, John Bucuzzo and wife, Betty of Haverhill; his nephews, Michael Cortese and companion, Carol Cass, Ralph Cusano and wife, Francine of Haverhill, Scott Bucuzzo of Massachusetts and Mark Bucuzzo of Haverill; his niece, Carole Azzarito and husband, Frank of Haverhill; along with extended family members and lifelong friends.
A period of visitation will be held Saturday, September 30, 2017, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Monument Square Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 334 Main Street, Haverhill, immediately followed by services at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial at Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Haverhill High School, Class of 1975 for the Mary A. Bucuzzo Scholarship Fund or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
