SOMERSET, MA: Barbara (Deering) Wallace, 86, of Somerset passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015, at the Kimwell Nursing Home in Fall River. She was the wife of Richard H. Wallace.


Born in Haverhill, Mass., the daughter of the late Joseph B. and Gladys (Lovering) Deering, Barbara was a 1947 graduate of Haverhill High School. She was a veteran of the Korean War having served as a Sergeant in the USMC from 1949 to 1952 and was the recipient of the National Defense and Good Conduct Medals. She lived in Somerset since 1964 and had previously lived at various bases while Richard served in the Marine Corps for 23 years. She was a communicant of St. Thomas More Church in Somerset. Mrs. Wallace worked for the Somerset School Department as a cafeteria worker for 15 years.


Barbara was a charter member of the Women Veterans Memorial, a member of the Women Marines Association, Rhode Island and National, The Marine Corps league #1285 of Somerset, the AmVets Post #72, Somerset, the American Legion #303, Swansea, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW #8500, Somerset, the Fleet Reserve Auxiliary #72, Fall River, and for 45 years she was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts as a Den Mother and District Commissioner. She was the recipient of several training awards to include the Silver Tepee, District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver.


She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Kathleen A. Pannoni and her husband, Bill of Warren, R.I.; four sons, Richard B. Wallace and his wife, Barabara of Westport, Michael J. Wallace and his wife, Mary of Hampton, Va., Joseph C. Wallace of Somerset, and Matthew M. Wallace and his wife, Jen of East Greenwich, R.I.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Wallace was the sister of the late Joan Norton.


Her funeral will be Monday, September 21, 2015, from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, MA, at 8 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Thomas More Church, Luther Avenue, Somerset. Interment with Military Honors will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, at 11:15 a.m. Calling hours are Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. in the funeral home.
