Lawrence - Bernard "Bernie" Greenside, 95, of Lawrence, passed away peacefully at the Nevins Home in Methuen, after a short illness.

Bernie was born in Dorchester, to Judah and Fannie Greenside (Bucheroff), and he was the youngest of four children. Bernie loved music and art. As a young man, Bernie was a professional musician playing the clarinet and saxophone over the New York and New England areas with many bands, including Les Brown and his Band of Renown. Throughout his career, his passion and talent lead him to be among the greats, like jazz legends, Louie Armstrong and Sammy Davis Jr. As the popularity of swing music declined in the early 1960s, Bernie took to his second love and decided to strengthen his art skills and enrolled in The Boston School of Practical Art in Boston, graduating in 1966. He shared his passion for painting and the arts with the community and taught oil painting at the Lawrence, Methuen and Andover senior centers, where he was also a member. He worked for many years as graphic designer/production manager for Modern Data Systems in Dorchester, which produced trade magazines.

Although he was a very accomplished portrait painter his greatest joy came in teaching others to paint, he especially enjoyed seeing the passion unfold in the eyes of the children he taught.

Bernie was preceded by the love of his life and wife of 35 years, Rose Aurelia (Grande) Greenside. They had no children.

A private graveside service will be held at Bellevue Cemetery. Anyone wishing to pay their respects are welcome to join his friends for a memorial service at The Lawrence Senior Center, 155 Haverhill St., Lawrence, on August 1, at 11:30 a.m.
