Donald Foss Jr.
Donald Buffum Foss Jr., 75, of North Andover, passed away after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family in his home on September 27, 2018. Donald, son of the late Donald Buffum Sr. and the late Violet (Turner) Foss, was born in Lawrence, Mass., on July 28, 1943. Raised and schooled in North Andover, he met the love of his life, Rosemary Murphy, while working as a paperboy at the age of 12 and went on to graduate North Andover High School in 1961. Immediately upon graduation, he entered the service as a Private E1 in the United States Army, with a specialty of telephone installation and repair. His specialty services were needed in Korea, where he was then stationed for the next two years during the Korean Conflict. Upon return from Korea, he was stationed at Fort Devens, Mass., where he honorably served as an E4 Specialist until his discharge on July 27, 1964. Donald spent the next 30-plus years utilizing his telephone installation skills working for New England Telephone Company, and eventually retired as a Second Level manager from Verizon in 1998.
In his personal life, Donald was an avid mountain climber and loved everything and anything outdoors. He spent his entire life with family and friends climbing peaks all over the country, including trips with his closest pals in the Adirondacks, the Appalachian Trail, Glacier National Park, Blue Ridge Mountains, and even a trip in the Selkirk Mountain range in British Columbia. Don had a passion for life and living it well. He spent years motor-homing across the country with his best friend, and wife, visiting every park and site along the way. He loved to fish and enjoyed spending time on his boat up at their treasured camp "homes" in Moosehead Lake, Maine, and Danforth Bay, N.H. He also cherished his daily walks, and those around North Andover would frequently see him on his 3-6 mile treks with his dog Buck, his "granddog" Tahoe, and walking hand in hand with his beloved wife. He loved his children and grandchildren beyond words and spent every ounce of his free time watching their sports, going to their activities, and taking opportunities to support them and spend time with each of them in special ways.
In addition to his parents, Donald was predeceased by his grandson, Steven L Murphy Jr. He touched so many lives and will be missed by all who knew him, including his beloved wife of 53 years, Rosemary (Murphy) Foss; his daughter Deborah Murphy and partner Scott Arsenault; his daughter Christine Thomas and her husband George; and daughter Katie Siwicki and her husband Vince, all of North Andover, Mass.; his adored grandchildren, Shannon Murphy, Katelyn and Tyler Thomas, and Olivia and Aiden Siwicki; his sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Jack Sullivan of North Andover; and his brother Michael Foss of Florida; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, October 1, 2018, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Conte Funeral Home, 17 3rd Street, North Andover. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 390 Main Street, North Andover, at 10 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Ridgewood Cemetery, North Andover, Mass., immediately following the funeral services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may
be made to a charity of your personal choosing. A special thanks goes out to the warm, dedicated, and caring doctors, nurses and staff at Dana Farber Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Don, Dad, Grampy...we will always carry your memory in our hearts.
