FL - Fernando M. Cafua, 69, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., formerly from the Merrimack Valley, passed away on Monday, December 9, 2019 at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., surrounded by his family.
Born on May 24, 1950 in Vila Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, Fernando was the son of the late Manuel and Maria (Guerrouxo) Cafua. He was raised and educated in Portugal and immigrated to the United States in 1968. He settled in Somerville, and later moved to the Merrimack Valley area before ultimately calling Palm Beach Gardens his home.
Fernando was a passionate Dunkin Donuts franchisee for over forty years. He always tended to his family's needs first and foremost. He was dedicated to his family and his loved ones. Fernando was a loving and devoted husband. He and his wife, Gilda, were true soul mates and he cherished her. He traveled the world to attend religious outings, he loved sports, especially soccer, and spending as much time as possible with his loved ones, especially with his sons and grandchildren. His greatest gift he gave to all was his incredible faith in God and his unconditional love for his family.
Family is the one word that truly encompasses Fernando. He was also a wonderful father. Leading by example, he taught his sons about kindness, love, and respect by never speaking an unkind word about others.
Fernando will be remembered as a family man, never forgetful of his roots. He enjoyed living a simple life, but anyone who sat in his presence would tell you that there was always a life lesson to be learned. It is through those lessons and tremendous love that his memory will live on in those who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Gilda (Santos) Cafua; three loving sons, Mark P. Cafua and his wife, Isabel, David P. Cafua and his wife, Christina, and Gregory P. Cafua and his wife, Meredith; and a sister, Natalia Costa. Fernando also leaves behind nine grandchildren: Felicia, Joshua, Jonathan, Nicholas, Caleb, Andrew, Laney, Callen, and Landon.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, December 12, 2019 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley Street in Methuen. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, December 13, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 35 Essex Street in Lawrence. Entombment will follow at Eternal Light Mausoleum in Salem, NH.
