George F. Hicks, 93, of Newburyport and formerly of Peabody, husband of the late Mary B. "Marie" (Malley) Hicks, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill with his family at his side.

George was born in Winchester on October 20, 1922 son of Walter and Leona (Cyr) Hicks. He was raised and educated in Winchester. In 1942, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served until being honorably discharged in 1946. In 1960 he and his family moved to Peabody where he has since resided.

George was employed for 40 years as a crane operator at the G.E. Riverworks Building 3030 until his retirement in 1984. He dedicated his life to his family and traveled extensively on summer vacations throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada. He was a 60-year member of the Metro Bowl League in Peabody, was an avid golfer and also enjoyed playing bingo.

George is survived by his two daughters, Sharon M. Fairbrother of Haverhill, and Leslie A. Detato of Rowley, his grandchildren and their spouses, Julie and David Salvador, Melissa Hodgdon, Dana and Charla Hodgdon, Christopher Moore, Matthew Detato and his cherished great-grandsons, Kyle and Zachary Salvador; his siblings, Arthur Hicks, Claire Hicks, Catherine Mallinson and Mildred Rolli, and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a son, Dana George Hicks and his son-in-law, Henry Fairbrother on July 5, 2016.

His family will receive relatives and friends Monday, July 18, at 9:30 a.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a celebration of life service in the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org/MANH.
