Atkinson, NH - George D. Larkin, 85, of Gainesville, Ga., former longtime resident of Atkinson, N.H., passed away at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Ga., on August 8, 2019, after a brief illness.
Born in Newton, Mass., he was the beloved son of the late George F. and Jean (MacLennan) Larkin. Besides his mother, George was also raised by his maternal grandparents, Duncan and Agnes MacLennan in Merrimac, Mass. He was a member of the graduating Class of 1952 at Merrimac High School as class Vice-President and Valedictorian. While attending high school he worked at the original Skip's hamburgers and after graduation he proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years.
Upon his return home from the Air Force he attended Bentley College and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. After marrying the love of his life, he returned to school once again and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University while working full-time. George was a hardworking man and spent many weekends doing tax preparations as a side job. He finally retired from working as an accountant and controller for over 30 years at Prolerized New England in Everett, Mass.
George loved the simple things in life the most. A roaring fire in his wood stove, his wife's home cooked meals, a good western movie, a hot cup of coffee, his stash of chocolates and plain old peace and quiet. George was a huge Patriots and wrestling fan and those close to him will always remember how excited and vocal he would become while watching them. He was also known for his unique sayings and one liners that made others chuckle. George was passionate about animals. He often donated to animal rights groups and adored the many pets his family owned through the years, most recently his Maltese, Cali. In George's younger years he enjoyed riding his motorcycle with friends. He had a love for the ocean and found such enjoyment in being near the water. George retired with his wife, Collette, and after living in Atkinson, N.H., for 30 years, they moved to Winter Haven, Fla., and most recently moved to Gainesville, Ga., in 2018.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Collette (Best) Larkin of Gainesville, Ga.; son George "Scott" Larkin Jr. of Lakeland, Fla.; daughters Dee Florent and her husband Joseph of Haverhill, Mass., Alisa Larkin of Sandown, N.H.; granddaughters Gianna and Annalise Marcotte of Sandown, N.H.; sister Jeanette Payson and her husband William of Plant City, Fla.; sisters-in-law Charlene Dewitt and her husband Bill of Gainesville, Ga., and Demaris Tomlin and husband John of Leicestershire, U.K.; daughter-in-law Rowena Larkin of Atkinson, N.H.; along with many nieces and nephews.
