Merrimac, MA - Irene M. (Syvinski) DeLong, age 94, of Merrimac, died July 6, 2019, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Harrison DeLong, who died January 4, 2008, and who was the former Postmaster and Veterans' Service Administrator in Merrimac.

Born in Amesbury, September 13, 1924, Irene was one of eight children of the late Vincent and Victoria Syvinski and had worked many years as a telephone operator for the former New England Telephone Company.

With her athletic nature, she enjoyed sharing her love of skating and dancing, and was always ready to take part in any sport that was being played. She was also a wonderful and extremely attentive caretaker for her husband, Harrison, during his years of declining health.

She is survived by three sons, Michael DeLong and wife Priscilla of Bradford, Richard DeLong and wife Cathy of Bradford, and Christopher DeLong and wife Lillian of Haverhill; three grandchildren, Meghan DeLong, Jonathan DeLong and Jennie DeLong; along with several generations of nieces and nephews, extended family and dear friends. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, October 26, 2019, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church of the Holy Family Parish, 2 School Street, Amesbury, followed by burial in Union Cemetery, Amesbury. In honor of Irene's love of animals, especially her three beloved dogs Heidi, Rosie, and Pierre, donations in her memory can be made to Nevens Farm, MSPCA, 400 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.
