Merrimac, MA - It is with heartfelt memories that the family of James Philip Parry announced he passed peacefully at Holy Family, Merrimack Valley Hospital surrounded by his loving family on November 23, 2019. Jim was born in Haverhill on November 20, 1934, to the late Roy S. and Ruth I. (Turner) Parry.

Jim graduated from Haverhill High School in 1952 and from Chamberlayne Junior College in 1954 with a major in Retailing. He was employed by William Filene's as an assistant department manager in Home Goods at North Shore Shopping Center in Peabody, Mass. He was then employed for 35 years at Retail Credit Company (Equifax Services) as an Insurance Inspector. He retired in 1994.

In 1957 Jim joined the U.S. Army Reserves and served for six years. He was a member of the 398th Finance and Disbursement Section and graduated from U.S. Army Finance School in Fort Harrison, Indiana. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.

Jim married Mary E. Walsh in 1960, and they resided in Merrimac for 45 years. During this time Jim was very active in his church and community. He was a 50-plus year member of Pilgrim Congregational Church and served as a Deacon, Church Moderator for 25 years, and a member of the Church Council. He and his wife were long time members of the Couples Club of the church and they worked in the kitchen for Christmas Fairs for many years. He joined the Merrimac Lions Club in 1963, later served as King Lion and received "Lion of the Year Award" in 1992. Jim was well known for "pouring coffee at the semi-annual bean suppers" and "grilling Essem hot dogs at the Christmas Parades and the Lions Club Flea Markets." When the Lions sponsored Boy Scout Troop 14, Jim was Troop Committee Chairman for many years and enjoyed the camping trips, hikes and troop activities he could share with his three sons. In 1979 when the Lions Club decided to award a yearly scholarship to high school senior(s) from Merrimac whose outstanding service to their school, community and organizations deserved recognition, Jim was appointed chairman of the Committee and served in the this position until 2016. Beginning in 1962, Jim donated blood regularly to the Red Cross until 2004. For many years, Jim was a member of the Merrimac COA Bowling League.

Jim's favorite vacations were trips to Lake Sunapee, Falmouth, Mass., and especially taking cruises. He and Mary traveled to most of the islands in the Caribbean, to Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, as well as several trans-Atlantic cruises. However, his favorite cruises were those taken at Thanksgiving when he and Mary hosted the entire family. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his family. He believed that the family was the most important part of his life and he was much loved.

In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his children, Cathryn E. Parry and her husband, Louis J. Cicolari of Clinton, Attorney Philip A. Parry and his wife Attorney Denise L. of Merrimac, David M. Parry and his wife, Stephanie K. of Acton, and Stephen R. Parry and his wife Crystal N. His grandchildren include Stephanie, Emily, Charles and Philip Parry, Lyndsey, Kristen and Sarah Parry, and Nina, Aiden and Ava Parry. Azaliea Parry is his great-granddaughter. Jim is also survived by two nieces and several great nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his brother, Richard S. Parry.

The family is most grateful to Dr. Anish Geevarghese and the nursing staff of the ICU, especially Laura, for their compassion and dedication. Also, Jim's time at Avita of Newburyport during this past year was filled with new friendships and a myriad of enriching activities. The level of care Jim received from the staff was exemplary.

Calling hours at Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main Street, Merrimac, on Sunday, December 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Pilgrim Congregational Church, Church Street, Merrimac, followed by burial in Locust Grove Cemetery.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial donations in Jim's memory be made to Merrimac Lions Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 5, Merrimac, MA 01860.

So very sorry. I will cherish this past year with Jim as a member of our Avita family. I was blessed to have known him in my teens. His blue eyes, kindness and love for basking In the sun, I will always remember. I was blessed as his nurse to remind him every day of his loving family and wonderful memories that he cherished. He was one of the most gentle souls I’ve been blessed to care for. Rest In Peace Jim and soak up the sun! Xoxo

Dear Mary and family,
We were very sad to hear of the passing of your beloved Jim. We send our deepest sympathy to you and the family. I have many fond memories of time spent with you both. I always enjoyed chatting with Jim and sharing a little Sapphire Bombay when we dined with "our group". We could always depend on Jim finding us a great place to dine ( and swim). We know what a loving and close family you have and that your family will be there to support each other during this difficult time. We will make every effort to attend the services but please know that because we have both had some serious health issues, if we are not able to be there physically we are with you in heart
...and mind. Our love to you at this very difficult time. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
