Merrimac, MA - Michael J. "Jim" Carey, age 74, longtime resident of Merrimac, passed away Saturday evening, November 9, 2019, at Lahey Medical Center in Burlington. He was the beloved husband of Suzanne (Colby) Carey, to whom he had been married 52 years.

Born in Haverhill, October 12, 1945, Jim was one of eight children of the late John W. and Viola (Blackburn) Carey and had attended Haverhill High School.

He was drafted on August 24, 1965, and proudly served with the United States Navy until his honorable discharge on September 15, 1969.

After returning home from his tour of duty, Jim went to work at Lucent Technologies as a pipefitter, continuing to work through the changeover to Wyeth/Pfizer, where he retired.

He was an avid golfer, having instilled his love of golfing in his two sons, always looking forward to hit the course with them whenever he could. Trips to Foxwoods were very enjoyable as well, especially when he was winning. However, there was no greater joy than the love of his family, seeing his sons mature and have their own families, and giving him the greatest gift of all, his grandchildren.

His selfless dedication and caring ways, will forever be treasured by his wife, Suzanne; his son, James Carey and wife Tara; his grandchildren, Matthew and Courtney Carey; Madison and Izabella Carey; his daughter-in-law, Jessica Carey; his brother, Paul Carey and wife Marie; sisters-in-law, Rachel Carey and Cathy Carey; a special god-daughter, Nicole Nadeau; along with countless nieces and nephews, extended family and good friends. He was predeceased by his son, John Carey, on January 3, 2016; his brothers, Richard, Robert and John Carey; and his three sisters, Rosemary Proia, Margaret Gallant, and Audrey Winter.

Visiting hours will be Thursday, November 21, 2019, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesubry, with funeral services at the funeral home on Friday morning, November 22, 2019, at 11 a.m. Burial will be private for the family.

Jim, Very sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts. Your dad (Mister C) is what I called him, will be missed. I always enjoyed golfing with you and him. Especially golfing with him in the tournaments when you were on your anniversary trip. He always said we had a better chance of winning when you weren't there. I remember him telling me he wished you were a lot like me. Not sure if he meant as a golfer or a better person. Just kidding of course. Just trying to make you feel better in these tough times. I Love You. May you and your family stay strong.

JIM WAS AN AWESOME PERSON. I REMEMBER HE AND I WOULD PASS OUT UNION PAMPHLETS EARLY IN THE MORNING AT THE GATE. HE HAD THE BEST SENSE OF HUMOR. MY DEEPEST SYMPATHIES TO ALL OF THE FAMILY.
